There is a lot in the history books that has been written about those who existed before us. This verse is special because it tells us that no matter how much time passes or the amount of people that pass through, the earth will last forever.

Roughly translated:
When one town falls, another town is built, but the ground is the same under them.
Why do I change it to "towns"? Because there are two words for "generation." The one used for people is derived from "yelad" (to be born). The word here, though used for people, is "dor" which has as its root "to dwell." It is a community term, used in Genesis when God makes His covenant with Abraham. In this context, the writer is referring to emptiness of human endeavors. In those days, towns would rise up on a site of land for strategic reasons (water, hilltop, etc.) and they would last a while until abandoned for greener pastures. Or because of invasion! But the strategic site remained as useful as ever for the new inhabitants. So another city would rise in its place.
